Policy Introduction

Icelandic authorities allow tourists to fly drones under Icelandic Transport Authority (ICETRA) regulations. Iceland has issued a series of regulations for drone flight operations. Some highlights of these regulations are as follows

Do not fly at altitudes higher than 120 m

Operators must keep aircraft within their line of sight while flying

Do not fly over crowds of people

Check all flight regulations & restrictions for the flight area before flying

Keep drones 150 m away from public buildings

Keep drones away from other air, ship, or vehicle traffic

Steps to follow as a new drone pilot

  • Check GEO zones before every flight.
  • Do not interfere with air traffic.
  • Stay 2 km away from international airports, and 1.5 km from other airports.
  • Stay 50 m away from buildings and residences in urban areas, and 150m away in rural areas.
  • Do not fly drones weighing more than 7 kg in urban areas, or more than 25 kg in rural areas.
  • Drones weighing 20 kg or more must be insured.

Carry-on BaggageEach passenger can carry no more than 20 detached batteries on board. Attached batteries can be carried on board.
Checked-in BaggageDetached batteries cannot be checked in. Equipment with small attached batteries can be checked in.
