Policy Introduction

Japanese authorities allow pilots to fly drones in compliance with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) regulations. The MLIT has issued a series of regulations for drone flight operations, and some highlights of these regulations are listed as follows:

Always fly below the MLIT’s altitude limit (150 m)

Do not fly at night

Do not drop items from your drone

Do not fly above populated areas

Do not fly within 30 m of people, buildings, or vehicles

Always keep aircraft within their line of sight while flying

Steps to follow as a new drone pilot

  • Flights near airports, above crowds, or with an altitude exceeding 150 m need to be approved in advance by the director of the local aviation bureau.
  • Do not use your drone to carry explosive or hazardous materials.
  • Always read through and comply with the latest local regulations before each flight.
*The content above is only for reference and is subject to change.
Read the local regulations and consult authorities if necessary before flying your drone.
