Policy Introduction

Canadian authorities allow tourists to fly drones under Transport Canada regulations. Transport Canada has issued a series of regulations for flying drones weighing more than 250 grams, and some highlights of these regulations are listed below.

Fly below 122 metres (400 feet) in the air

Always Fly Within Line of Sight

Fly at night only with position lights on and within visual line of sight.

Fly away from airports and heliports (5.6 kilometres from airports, 1.9 kilometres from heliports)

Steps to follow as a new drone pilot

  • Flying at night is permissible if your drone is equipped with position lights that are on, and visual line-of-sight is maintained.
  • Mark your drone with your registration number.
  • Keep your drone within your visual line of sight.
  • Fly away from bystanders (at a minimum horizontal distance of 30 metres for basic operations) and away from other aircraft.
